The world is becoming smaller

Almost everyone is worried about the problem of overpopulation. The population of the world will rise to six billion people. As a result , the world we live in is becoming smaller and smaller. With population increase, all kinds of other problems have come. Land resources, for example, are diminishing very fast and will be used up a few hundred years later. Therefore the world will not have enough natural resources for their needs. Another big problem is that the food supply can not satisfy people’s demand. In the end, these problems will threaten the life of human beings. In order to make us live comfortably in this world, we should do everything we can to stop the population from rising quickly. The best way to solve the problem is to use family planning to control the population increase. China, one of these countries, is playing an important role at this point. Otherwise, there is no standing room for us to live on.

Success in your eyes

No doubt, everyone wishes to be successful in life. In my eyes, opportunity is a part of success. Many great inventors discovered a new theory by chance. It is true that some successes can be won because of unexpected help and findings.

Opportunities don’t come often. They come quietly and often go by without being noticed. Actually, many opportunities have been lost on the way to success.

Therefore, it is advisable that you should treat opportunities with care. An opportunity just brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. Only by working hard, making great efforts and getting prepared will you catch the coming opportunity and get to your goal.

We have only one earth to live on

Environment means the land, water and atmosphere we live by. Environment is the earth, the only planet and home for the human race. No one will doubt that we can never survive while the land, water and atmosphere are seriously polluted.

We are facing these environmental problems. Pollution is becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, the poisonous gas sent off by factories and motors has made the air unhealthy for people to breathe. Foe another example, waste water keeps flowing into rivers and lakes; as a result, many water living things are dying out. Furthermore, everywhere we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed. Pollution is, in fact, threatening our existence.

We must take immediate measures to fight against pollution. We should look upon nature as our closest friend. As is known to us all, we have only one earth to live on.

Honesty is the best policy

What is honesty? Honesty means speaking the truth and being fair and upright in act. Considered a virtue, it is admired in every country and every culture. He who lies and cheats is dishonest. Dishonesty is generally looked upon as an evil by the society.

As the English proverb goes, honesty is the best policy. For one thing, if you want to be trusted and respected by your friends, you must be honest. A liar is always looked down upon. For another, if you want to succeed in your work, the first thing you should have is honesty. It is through honest efforts that many famous persons became great figures in history. Therefore whatever your aim is, you must work honestly to get it. Those who do their work dishonestly and succeed for a time, sooner or later, will not have anything but troubles.

In what ways do you think the world would be different in the 21st century?

If you compare the life of people today with that before the industrial revolution, it is easy to see that science has done a great deal to improve the people’s lives. People now travel in cars, buses, trains, and airplanes, bringing distant lands in a matter of hours.

With the further advance of science in the 21st century, Science will affect us more directly in many ways than we have seen today. The family robots will finish all the house things instead of human beings if you turn on the switch. You may depend on the robots to help you do some shopping. If you are in hospital to be operated, the robot doctors will meet your demands without delay. In a word, we can look forward to greater conveniences and comforts which, even today, seem quite unimaginable.

How do advertisements affect our life?

Advertisements appear everywhere in modern society. For example, when you walk along the streets, you can see large advertisement boards with pretty girls smiling at you. In newspapers, for another example, you often see half of the pages covered with advertisements. For still another example, you can turn on the TV set and you can see advertisements again. Whether you like it or not, they are pouring into your life.

Although advertisements enable you to make decisions quickly, sometimes they can cause trouble, because advertising is not always truthful. The goods are not always as good as they are advertised. On the other hand, too many advertisements are boring to our life and can not make us tell right from wrong.

As a matter of fact, advertisements have become one of the important voices speaking to us today: they have been in our daily life.

Foreign fast food in China

Nowadays, more and more people in the developed countries are becoming aware of the link between diet and good health. But in most of the developing countries, people still don’t realize the importance of a healthier diet. Almost all over the big cities in China, you can see many foreign fast food shops such as Mcdonald"s, Kentucky, Pizza Hut and so on. The majority of the kids enjoy tasting very much. If a kid often goes there, he or she may put up weight. So more and more fat children have appeared in sight. As we know, these heavy fried foods contain too high calories and are harmful to our health. If you eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite. Once our eating habits are changed, many terrible illnesses will visit you without hesitation. So I call these foreign fast foods junk food. We’d better not eat them all the time for our health.

It is time for Chinese government to do something to encourage the eating of the right kinds of food. Otherwise, the people will suffer more.

Does TV play a positive or negative role in modern society?

TV shows a very vivid world to us. On television, we can watch exciting football matches or Olympic Games. We can “travel” to New York to have sightseeing or to London to attend the royal weddings. We can also “go” to a concert with a cup of coffee in our hand. From TV, we can learn many things happening in the world without having to go outside our houses.

Television also plays an educational role in our daily life. By providing TV university courses, television offers educational programs for different viewers. Of all the programs, “English on Sunday” is my favourite.

However, it can also be harmful. It hurts our eyes and can cause nearsightedness. Watching TV too much does harm to our sleep and work and cuts down children’s study time. In short, we should regard television as our assistant, not our master.

Bridging the generation gap

Nowadays there is often a lack of understanding between parents and kids. That is called generation gap. We know where there is the old and the youth, there is the generation gap. Take my classmate’s family as an example. She and her mother have never been in agreement in doing things, and always have a quarrel whenever they are going to do something.

Generation gap is natural, but very influential. But in my opinion, the hard problem can be completely solved. If parents give kids more understanding, keep a friendly relationship with them, respect each other, listen to the words of each other and discuss their problems patiently, both groups will narrow the gap and work wonders to bridge the generation gap.

Should cloning be encouraged?

In modern society science to human beings is like food to our bodies. It is science that frees us from the bondage of Nature. But when it is wrongly used, its destructive power is uncontrollable and terrible. For example, cloning can help us to duplicate many new living things for the cell study when these become less. From here, we can see science is advancing rapidly. Yet if scientists want to study human cloning, I think this will destroy the normal life of human beings and no one will know who is who. For another, it will cause the serious problem of overpopulation. It is said that President George W. Bush in America has ordered that scientists stop studying cloning, mainly human cloning. I agree with him completely when I heard the good news.

One scientist said, “In the past, man studied science because he wanted to understand Nature, But today, to study science is to master Nature.” So we must make science serve us for our benefit.
